Self love is the cornerstone of my message to women and young girls. If you ever pay attention to any of my social media through my personal account or Black Girl Beautiful, you’ll hear me talk about it nearly everyday. I’m also incredibly passionate about embracing yourself regardless of so-called flaws and imperfections. It’s always a pleasure to be be able to share my message and platform with others, and in the January 2017 issue Essence Magazine granted me that wish.
In the feature titled “The Eye of The Beholder,” Essence Beauty editor Nykia Spradley interviewed me along with three other women and one little girl who are all breaking boundaries and speaking up for our uniqueness. We answer questions about shaking off the naysayers, accepting ourselves, embracing our differences, and celebrating our beauty. As you could have guessed, I talked about embracing my freckles and celebrating our blackness. You can read the interview here, but I as I also told Essence…
I embrace my beauty by not hiding it. What you see is what you get. I’m not covering up or changing who I am to be accepted by anyone and I encourage others to do the same. I am me in this skin 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year for the rest of my life. I must tell myself everyday that I am beautiful and own that truth or else I will shrink back into being that scared child I once was.
Did I mention superstar Vanessa Williams and her daughter Jillian, lead singer of Lion Babe, are gracing the cover?! Talk about good genes. The other great women featured in this article include 8-year-old model Ava Clarke and her mom Shayla Edney, yoga teacher Jessamyn Stanley, and blogger/model Mama Cax. Each individual has something special to offer to this world and she doesn’t hide her uniqueness. That in and of itself is inspiring.
Once again, I am incredibly honored to be in Essence alongside these phenomenal females. Take a look at the interview online and get inspired.
